Opening of the Awareness art object by OKKO and Come Back Alive

Task
To prepare and conduct the opening of the new Awareness art object in Kyiv’s Obolon district, created as a tribute to territorial defense fighters. To ensure its presence in the media and its association with the initiators — OKKO and the Come Back Alive foundation.
  • To produce video and photo materials.
  • To create a website about the art object.
Implementation

Concept of the art object

As part of the OKO ZA OKO initiative, the client prepared for the unveiling of the Awareness art object — a symbol of gratitude to the Territorial Defense Forces, who, from the first days of the full-scale war, defended their cities and the country.

Awareness is a sculpture consisting of two parts, symbolizing the inner transformation experienced by millions of Ukrainians after February 24, 2022. One part embodies anxiety and confusion, the other — calm and determination. It’s about fear that turned into strength.

At the first stage, the agency:
  • studied the concept of the art object;
  • proposed a new name;
  • researched similar cases in Ukraine and abroad;
  • developed a communication framework and identified target audiences;
  • created a communication plan for the public presentation of the object and subsequent activities.
Preparation for the opening
At the preparation stage, the UK comms team:
  • visited the location and the workshop where the sculpture was being created;
  • advised the client on the format of the opening;
  • wrote the event script and assisted with guest invitations;
  • ordered special fabric for the unveiling — it had to be waterproof yet fall away easily;
  • organized the work of a photographer, videographer, technical contractor, and catering.

Accessibility

An information plaque with Braille text was installed next to the art object. For this, we engaged an organization specializing in such translations and an independent expert to check accuracy. The text contains information about the sculpture’s concept, its authors, and a QR code to the project website.

Opening event
The event was held in a small-scale format — as a curator’s tour. The UK comms team accompanied guests and journalists, coordinated speeches, ensured photo and video coverage, and supervised the technical team’s work.
The opening took place without delays or technical issues.

Media relations
  • Prepared a press announcement and invited media to the opening.
  • Developed a communication framework and key messages for crisis communication.
  • Briefed the speakers.
  • Coordinated media work on site.
  • Prepared and distributed a post-release (adapted for news, cultural, architectural, and military outlets).
  • Created stories and reels from the event for quick dissemination.
  • Additionally pitched the news to 4 national and 3 regional media outlets.

Video

In partnership with AUROOM films production, we created two promotional videos:
  • a teaser for social media (released a week before the opening);
  • a full video premiere of the art object.
The challenge was that one part of the sculpture has a mirror surface, and regular filming would constantly capture reflections of the camera and equipment. Therefore, partners developed a 3D model of the art object and produced a fully graphic video showing the transformation of emotions — from storm to calm — and conveying the meaning of the artwork: to preserve the contribution of defenders and express gratitude to them.
Results
  • 82 publications in national and regional media
  • 25 publications generated directly by UK comms
  • 266 mentions on social media
  • 277,000+ potential reach

The opening was attended by Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko, Major General Valentyn Holovnov — Head of Logistics at the Territorial Defense Command HQ, Akhtem Seitablaiev — director, actor, and serviceman, and Oleh Karpenko — Deputy Director of the Come Back Alive foundation. The tour format event was hosted by Vasyl Dmytriv, OKKO’s CMO.

We managed to minimize the risk of negative coverage — media reactions were mostly neutral or positive.

The art object’s website is now in the final stage of development. UK comms has handled it “turnkey” — from the technical side to design, copywriting, and SEO optimization.
